[Vwdiesel] Diesel Purge

For several months my heap has been smoking and exhibiting high fuel
consumption. Rebuilt injectors made little difference. Checking the
compression, valve and pump timing showed no defect. On Hagars
suggestion I tried the Lubro-Moly Diesel Purge.
I rigged up a small jar in the engine compartment and hooked things up
with 6mm hose which fits all the nipples tightly enough that clamps
were not needed. I then used 2/3 of a can idling and driving around
the neighborhood. I did this until the pump ran dry. I then refilled
the jar with fresh Diesel Purge, got the pump primed and parked it
overnight.
The next day I ran the rest through and took it for a test drive.
After driving it far enough that I figured that the Diesel Purge in
the pump had been replaced with diesel from the tank I tried hard
acceleration at high rpm. This did not produce enough smoke to be
visible in daylight, which was very easy to do before. On a test hill
it performed noticeably better. It feels and sounds way better. Not
sure where the problem was. Because the injectors were just rebuilt
it must have been something in the pump .
I had been thinking that the problem was that the pump was not
advancing the injection enough and that this explained the smoke and
poor performance. I am just guessing about this because I don't have
a way of measuring pump advance. Before I applied the Diesel Purge I
did a crude test. I found that if I was in 4th gear and going 40 mph
there was no resistance over the full travel of the manual advance.
At any speed below 40 mph resistance would be felt before the advance
was fully out. After the Diesel Purge treatment this test did not
change noticeably. I assume that this means that the advance did not
change.
I will take it for a long drive this Sunday and see what the fuel
consumption is doing.
