  From my personal experiences the first things I'd check are the 
injectors and the compression, while they're out.  Then recheck the 
cam and pump timing, which I'm sure you already have.
  Personally I wouldn't go looking for the see-it-in-the-mirror-only-
at-night smoke.  It's there on 99% of them 99% of the time.  Dad's 
pu didnt' have it even with the new head.  With a few miles on it 
though, it's back.
