Rob, Yes, they have 150 HP TDI's that get 50 MPG,
but I don't think you are realizing what he's saying.
Even the 90 HP engines will not get 50 MPG IF you are
running them at 90 HP output. When you are getting
the good MPG's, you are running at a fraction of the HP
output, not with your foot on the floor.
I have a '99.5 Jetta TDI that I have modified a little,
and it will hit about 130-135 HP or so on a dyno. I still
get about 51 MPG if I keep my foot off the loud peddle and
stay at 75 MPH or less in good weather..
Same car with a lesser amount of HP tweeking a year before got
39 MPG running 65-70 mph, but with 3 bicycles on the back and
a 35-45 MPH head wind.
Oh, and as for the 100 MPG 75 HP TDI, they've been there, done that! :)
Check this link to a artical printed in 2000,
http://www.dieselnet.com/news/0007vw.html
And around the world in 80 days, on under 1000L of fuel!
Read the journals of the drivers.

Also a .pdf file on the same engine in the A2 Audi..

Anyway, on another subject, I have 2 '81 rabbits that I was hopeing to make
into one good rabbit by taking the good parts from both to make one.
I have not liscenced either one of them as they are not in running condition
right now. Got a note today that I have to get tag's on them, or move them in 15 days
or the city will tow them away. :(
I had hoped that I would get time to work on them to get them running by now,
but about a month ago a broke my leg in a car wreck and have not been in any
shape to do anything with these cars. The engines are OK I think, but I
had pulled the radiators to check them and both had leaks. Also the A/C is
shot and I have been collecting parts to do away with it. One of the
CV joints is bad on one of the cars, and I hoped to be able to take one
off the other car, or use one of the ones I got off E-bay to fix it.
I got a radiator from David Cook from down in Manhattian, which checked out good
and I was going to use it, but have not had time between crappy winter weather and
busted leg. By the way, if you ever get to Manhattian, check out Davids red and white
diesel cabrio. Makes me wish I had one to transplant the diesel engine out of one of my doaner
cars into! :) BTW David, I haven't forgotten the cold start cable I said I would get
for you.. Its just going to take some time for me to heal and get back out under the hood.
Well, I have 15 days to decide what to do with the cars.. depending on my mood I'll
either get a liscence for them even though they don't run, along with insurance, or
I'll have to see what can be done with them.. Maybe I'll see who else would want them
who could take them off my hands. After breaking my leg in a wreck in a small car
( '04 chevy Aveo cracker box), I am somewhat shy of riding in small cars..
I wish that I had been driving my 7100 lb 3/4 ton diesel 4x4 Dodge truck when the other
car pulled out in front of me while I was doing 45 MPH.
I think I would have turned out in a lot better shape if I had!
Ah well, enough ramblenings.. time for me to take a pain pill and head for the couch for a nap...
Best wish's to all, as I head back into Lurker mode..

Holy schmokes. Well at 150 HP and 50 MPG US there ain't gonna be anything
left like schmoke coming out of the pipe. I am scheptical as this, at first
blush sounds like free energy. Why didn't the engineers try instead to make
a 75 HP engine that gets 100 MPG US? I'd pay money for one of those.
