Ha James Maybe the headgasket was left off altogether ;op
I was just quoting the book info which doesn't account for
overtightness in that paragraph. I was wondering if for
instance half the gap of 0.1mm was the norm...
However if new valves are put in an old head then they
should be checked for length. It is done with a span of
steel across the valve cover seating area and the depth to
the stem end must be within certain limits too big a gap and
valve lapping needed too small (which is Andrews case) and
ends need grinding.
A good check would be to slacken off the cam caps and see
how far you need to go before a fine feeler gauge will fit
between cam [off lobe] and hydraulic follower...
