Same here.  We're all diesel at the moment.  Wife's got a Passat, I've got an F250.
I'll have to look into the canola thing.  I don't really want to run SVO, it gets too cold here.
But it would make excellent biod fuel stock.  I wonder what conversion costs would run?

I live 35 miles from work & would prefer to pedal there than run a genbike all day. Not much of a life. 
Actually I'm pretty happy getting 49 mpg from VW diesel; just as soon skip the whole hydrogen fuel thing for the time being. Another thread here claims canola oil can be had pure for 90 cents per gallon/US.
Worth investigatin I think.
BTW, your energy analysis is right on.
