What do you have for the job?  I've done it with only a torch, and a drift.
I've done it with a hydraulic press, using 3/4" drive sockets instead
of the VW tools.

As for alignment...if you take the assembly off at the ball joint,
and pull the strut out as well, you won't destroy your alignment.

What do you have available?  Is there a shop near you with a press?
