Small press or large vise or drawbolt. Remove snap rings. New bearing presses old one out. Press only on outer race. I use a three inch section of cast iron pipe (4" diameter) to support wheel bearing housing. Removing inner race frrom hub is sometimes a pain. High speed cut off tool cuts notch in race; then chisel to split it. When pressing hub into new bearing, support inner race - in other words, no load on balls. Good to have a pile of pipe pieces & old bearings to use in process.

Subject: [Vwdiesel] Front Wheel bearing

I need to replace the front wheel bearing and strut tower bearing. In my 86 Golf. Iv'e taken a strut out before so that shouldn't be a problem.

Has anyone sucessfully replaced a front wheel bearing ? I'm pretty sure I can handle getting the hub out. The Bentley manual refers to about 8 different VW special tools to get the bearing out of the hub. Which of course I have none of.

Coments ? Advice ?
