Good idea!

Advancing the stock camshaft may also be useful in improving low end torque,
but I hear you cannot move very far or you have valve + piston colissions.

Far as I know, there is/was a marine version of the VW diesel called a
"pathfinder".

Typically, the marine versions of gasoline engines are optimized for higher
torque at lower speed than automotive versions.  They are also intended to
be working at higher load levels than automotive versions.

Perhaps a camshaft from one of these would be a good choice for a stationary
engine.
