It's not a diesel.  All of the synchros were 5-cylinder gas.
An Audi
5-cylinder TD would drop in there nicely though.

There's a guy called Jack on the VW GTD site that has just
been doing the very same thing. Unfortunately he's
discovered some extremely deep corrosion on one or two of
the bores  just hours before job completion. He's probably
devastated...

This is one I'll be sniping later today with the view of
dropping my spare TD in . It's not as pretty as that
metallic one but a little effort and it'll replace my
existing white one... maybe I'll just swap plates...
