There must be contact right across the face of the taper.

Agreed, but why not check it before reworking the taper. You're getting
ahead of yourself.

Use some machinist's blue or gear setting blue, or a magic marker (not a
paint marker)
Blue shaft, install sprocket lightly, turn, remove, and look for even
contact.

Really, the repeatability of the machining jobs on these engines really
impresses me.  You can take a sprocket manufactured ten or fifteen years
apart from the cam, and install it.  It fits.  Usually perfectly in my
experience.
