Jon  what do you mean  your starter takes 10 attempts to
engage? Are you saying its silent? Or is it spinning freely?
One thing to remember  is that generally its either broke or
faulty. As you get it to work after a while  then it's not
broke!  Most old age faults are the contacts not seating
correctly. A lot of solenoids will come apart (after a
little desoldering) If its spinning and 'grating' then it's
a burr on flywheel and/or bendix. If its on the fly wheel
then new starter may give you grief too
