No, clutches do not "break in". They grip, or don't.
If they slip, they glaze just like brake pads can if they are not properly
bedded in when new. A clutch cannot be allowed to slip due to the extreme
heat that is generated when one does... there is no mechanism to remove the
heat like brakes can.
You reset the free play in the clutch cable... as in the clutch cable isn't
holding the clutch partially disengaged?
If there is free play in the clutch pedal, and you did not machine the
flywheel and pressure plate surfaces, or better, use a new pressure plate, I
would be suspicious of them if your old clutch was slipping. Never simply
install a new friction disc into a clutch that has been slipping. The heat
generated from slipping causes the metal surfaces to warp, and it will
continue to slip. Why this is, is because the higher spots touch, and the
lower spots don't, and the amount of friction the higher spots can generate
is insufficient, so the clutch winds up slipping, and glazing the friciton
disc ensuring that the clutch will never perform properly.
A stock 1986 clutch can hold over a hundred horses at bay, so if a new
installation slips, there is something not right.

So, maybe it needs to be broken in? I've only driven
a mile or so, so hopefully all that slipping didn't do
anything...
