Most of the vw's I've worked on have used Motorola alternators with internal regulators ( I assume Bosch uses the same or similar design), the sparks you are talking about can be very damaging to the internal regulator and probably any other electronic device that might also be connected to the battery. I know I worked for Motorola for 12 years and although the design is good they aren't designed to take those kinds of voltage spikes since they don't normally occur during operation of the vehicle.
And if you say it never caused any problem for you in the past, the answer to that is, semiconductor devices can be degraded and show up as a failure later when stressed.
My reasoning behind posting to the question was simply Why take a unnecessary chance when a simple tool can save the potential for damage?
