[Vwdiesel] Starter quick fix.... help prevent voltage spikes

Hi Steve
What you say sounds feasible...

But now I've thought about it I'm a little unsure:
What's the difference between a hidden contact switch and my piece of wire
(unless there's some kind of capacitive suppressor hidden there?).
Also can the voltage spikes be created whilst part of the circuit is the
'voltage stabilizing' battery?
Aren't the sensitive parts of the car tucked behind a voltage stabiliser
on the instrument display?
What happens to the 6 inductances [lightbulbs] that are fired up with the
hazard warning flasher?
All other relays?
Although my 'AVO' says there is 8VA/C from the W terminal; my old
oscilloscope clearly shows spikes of 20V or more IIRC and these are coming
out at (is it 6) or 12 times per rpm?
Am I remembering something in the past about jump starting a vehicle and
not to do it with no battery attached? I know I have done it 'tut tut'!
My 'electric knowledge' is a little weak these days... Infact everything
is; but I'm always willing to reabsorb the info again if not for the first
time!

Cheers
Mark

  Hi Mark

Most of the vw's I've worked on have used Motorola alternators with
internal regulators ( I assume Bosch uses the same or similar design), the
sparks you are talking about can be very damaging to the internal regulator
and probably any other electronic device that might also be connected to
the battery. I know I worked for Motorola for 12 years and although the
design is good they aren't designed to take those kinds of voltage spikes
since they don't normally occur during operation of the vehicle.
And if you say it never caused any problem for you in the past, the
answer to that is, semiconductor devices can be degraded and show up as a
failure later when stressed.
My reasoning behind posting to the question was simply Why take a
unnecessary chance when a simple tool can save the potential for damage?

  Thanks Steve
