If you can stand to add oil often, I don't see a need to dig into it. My 1.6
in my jetta was running a qt every 400 miles and ran like a champ except for
the smoke and oil useage. It finally got to me and when I tore into it there
was one piston missing a 1/4inch piece of the top ring. This was from the
engine rebuilding place not owning up to their work and put it together
anyway. So you can run it if you don't mind putting in the oil. Can look at
it this way you wouldn't have to change your oil very much since it would be
new most of the time.

Interesting observations James! In this case however, the car had
already been subjected to youngsters for about a year before mine got
hold of it. This has been a recent development while the engine has
been run w/mucho testosterone for about 3 years. Oil consumption has
only been noticeable for about 3 months.
Is the consensus from the group most likely broken rings or bad valve
guides/seals? I guess my next course of action is to pull the head and
check the valves for play. As long as it will start and run OK is there
any reason I shouldn't wait until spring for this job?
