Interesting observations James! In this case however, the car had
already been subjected to youngsters for about a year before mine got
hold of it. This has been a recent development while the engine has
been run w/mucho testosterone for about 3 years. Oil consumption has
only been noticeable for about 3 months.
____
Most likely a cracked ring then. You can move a pile of oil past intake
guides, but there is no reason it would suddenly start, as there is nothing
there that can fail suddenly and cause them to leak. Guides are just a
progressively worse thing usually.
Is the consensus from the group most likely broken rings or bad valve
guides/seals? I guess my next course of action is to pull the head and
check the valves for play.
_____
There probably will be play anyway, you don't relaly need to check them.
The tolerance on radial play in Bentley is HUGE. I've personally checked VW
heads that you could wiggle the valves back and forth with your fingers in
such a manner as to be alarming, but the motor didn't use much oil outside
of what would be considered normal.
As long as it will start and run OK is there
any reason I shouldn't wait until spring for this job?
____
Well, a bad ring can cause really poor starts if the compression is too low,
and score the cylinder walls if broken into smaler pieces.
You needed a winter project anyway....
If it starts and runs okay, drive it, but be aware of the increased chance
of runaway if the blowby is severe.
