So we'd all better be careful when jumpstarting people?
Bob you didn't run your battery with the filler caps off did you? ;o)

That's why the last connection is to connect the ground (earth) to the
chassis or engine block of the vehicle doing the boosting, and is the first
one to be disconnected.
No chance of spark blowing the battery, and less chance of damaging the
boosted vehicle electronics. The one being boosted gets to make the
hydrogen as it's battery is being charged, and futzing with the cables on a
charging battery is dangerous, and you would need someone else to hold your
sign for you. (that would be the sign that reads "I'm Stupid" for those
that don't remember the song)
There are a lot of scarred corneas out there from batteries.
I pushed shopping carts one winter when I was 15 year old kid working at
Safeway, I saw three batteries killed and acid splash injuries from helpful
people trying to boost other people's cars and not knowing how.
I would not recommend pouring baking soda powder into your eyes either.
Plenty of water yes. That's why conscientious shops have eye wash stations
for such emergencies. Baking soda is for neutralizing loose acid, and eyes
are no place for further damage from fizzing acid-base reactions.
