Using S rated oil, and
  changing frequently (3000 miles, perhaps more, perhaps less),
  may be economically advantageous.  Using Rotella 15W40 is 
  conservative, and will likely serve you well, as well.


  Typically, diesel rated oil is 50% or less higher cost than a cheap gas 
only oil.  Changing at 3K miles vs 5K or especially the VW recommended 
7500 mile intervals doesn't pan out as economically advantageous.  :-)
   Cheap oil tends to stink more on teardown as well as the engine being 
more gungy.  I've seen a couple run on cheap Chevron (gas) and it was 
flaky carboned up all over inside.
