...................yes, solved, totally. Both doors now open and close
using either the inside or the outside handle. And the locking posts on the
window sills work also.

..................After I got the doors open using Brian Harrison's method,
I pumped penetrating oil up through each lock mechanism by inserting a fine
plastic tube into the screwdriver hole in the bottom of the lock and
flushing the penetrating oil under pressure from a large syringe. I pushed
a couple ounces through each lock and then rattled each lever about 100
times and repeatedly opened and closed the pivoting claw that grabs the
fixed post on the door frame. I did this a HUGE number of times just to
work out the grit and grime.

The lower jaw of the pivoting claw is designed to get wedged in place by a
piece of steel from the lower section of the lock. If you look at a 85
Jetta Bentley diagram (section 57), I think it is "Lever A." This piece of
steel gets pulled away when you operate the inside door opener-lever. That
is what allows you to open the door from the inside. I guess the outside
handle does the same thing but I didn't test that.

Anyhow, I think this little piece of wedging steel " Lever A" is what hung
up a few times in my "try-it-a hundred-times" test. I had to poke at it
with a long nail, and flush some more penetrating oil into that section,
and that seemed to loosen it up so it worked again. Once when it stuck, I
tried raping the lock sharply with the handle of a big screwdriver. The rap
did the same thing as the oil flush and nail-jabbing.....it got the small
steel wedge "Lever A" moving again and working at the end of the inside
door opener-lever.
.
So, I guess the spring James (and you, Mark) are talking about is the one
that is on the same shaft and right next to that little piece of wedging
steel, which I am calling "Lever A" in the attached lock image.

And I am guessing about all of this. I never took one of the locks off the
door. I never took one apart. But I did get two of them to work almost like
new.

...........................None of my springs were broken...just hung up on
grit, corrosion and hardened grease, probably (Doyt)
