Now that you have worked them thisaway and thataway for so long, trust me,
if you take them off, there is as much crud still in there. The beautious
design of laying the latch on it's side traps it's own weight of fine road
dust in there. I had to take mine off and disassemble... then wire brush
on the bench grinder to make them shiny, and reassemble. IIRC, I changed
one spring too, it was rusted partway through and was about to die so I
could repeat the process with new door handles and an attitude.
Since I discovered Fluid Film, I haven't had a lick of trouble with this.
Oh, one other good place to shoot lube into the latch mechanism is the top
outer corner where the bends in the metal leave a smallish hole- this lubes
the slider thingy nicely and keeps the spring from rusting too. Very
effective.
