[Vwdiesel] air filter clips

Is there a trick to replacing the air filter housing (1.6 NA in 82 
Rabbit)? I can get the top two clips to latch but I can't get the 
bottom two, and the one on the passenger side is very hard to get my 
hand to. Do I need to remove the fuel filter for easier access? Or come 
at them from under the car?

The old air filter did not look very dirty. There was a gray (not 
black) area in the middle about the size of a dollar bill and there was 
just a thin coating of oil on the bottom of the intake manifold.
