[Vwdiesel] *help! '93 EV diesel tranny problems*

OK, it's my clutch (duh)
(doh)
I actually know nothing about the clutch on the Eurovan
I bought a copy of Bentley thru eBay but it hasn't arrived yet
can anyone give me a little general info here?
is the clutch hydraulic (I assume)?
might I have a master cylinder leak/failure?
I don't have enough clutch to get into gear from a stop
have to shut down the engine to get into 1st or reverse
otherwise I can do no-clutch shifting on the fly

but is there a typical clutch system failure here?
any obvious things I should look at?
