  It can depend on how it's timed (or improperly timed).  I worked on a 
pu recently that would die every time you let out the clutch without 
distinctly stepping on the throttle, among other problems like a bad 
starter to add to the joy.
  Set the timing properly.  Didn't seem much different since I hadn't driven 
it a lot but heard back that it didn't die when starting out any more.  Alt 
died at least twice since though.  Sheesh!
  It didn't have enough CR to ping but it sure was timed so that the 
electronics 
didn't have enough range in the correct direction to compensate what it 
needed.  
In such cases a car would indeed ping even though it was supposed to and 
trying to correct it.
