I think the whole point is that often the manufacturers reccomendations
are often "above and beyond" on things like fuel ocatane requirements
because the recommendation would have to meet all requirements for
all drivers in all conditions. In other words no room for YMMV. Just as
my 350 will run fine at 8 BTDC yours may only run well at 4 BTDC and
Joe Blow's has to be at 4 ATDC so as not to rattle, one car/engine may
do well on 85 octane while another of the same car/engine may need 87,
89 or 92 to get the same mileage, performance, or anti rattle. Most cars
do vary, the automatic retard and advance tends to hide this much more
than in the "old days."
If you try it, then you know. If you don't then you only can assume your
car reacts as someone else's whom you've talked to or heard of, or that
breaking the car manufacturers recommendation is a no-no. ;-)
