Properly tuned, it should be just as your father-in-law experienced.

How long would it take to have maintenance issues if you ran the incorrect
grade of fuel? My father-in-law ran regular 87 octane in his 98 Eldorado
North Star the entire time he had it and it never had a problem. It had 86k
on it before he traded it. It didn't run any different from what I can tell
and the fuel economy was great at 30mpg on our trips to Florida.

I'm just learning with diesels and from what I have read so far and seen
here is the higher the cetane the better. How much can be too much if there
is such a thing?

Part of it for me is my aviation background. It is almost second nature
to follow the mfg. recommendations in the matters of fuel, oil, and
other vital fluids. Another is the fact that for the Neon and several
other outfits on the place the 85 octane causes them to rattle when
climbing. I tried to run the neon on 85 but quit after a couple of
weeks because of the poor performance. It is false economy to run a
grade of fuel lower then the engine was designed and tuned for. In the
end you will have maintenance issues.
