[Vwdiesel] Why #3

I can add to this that when I had our old 79 rabbit diesel I was coming back
from a friend's house in Va to the base which was 180 miles away. I was
running 55mph on an open four lane when the engine started to get really
loud kind of fast and then it just stopped and I noticed something out of my
rear view mirror. Well I coasted to the side of the road, popped the hood to
find that #1 rod went through the block and knocked off my water pump,
(remember review mirror thing) that was the water pump belt. Needless to say
that engine was toast and it only had 138k on it. We bought it new back in
79.Took care of it with 3k oil changes by the dealer mostly since it was a
diesel, my dad just did that and I was just a young teenager back then. It
had it's fair share of head gasket problems as well as one new head at I
think some where around 60k. That was a $500 job by the dealer back in those
days. My dad wasn't happy about that. That little thing ran great other
wise. Got 50mpg with no problems. I remember going 500 miles to a tank
coming back from Orlando to NC. Boy my eye balls were floating on that trip.
I bought a used 1982 diesel engine from a local salvage yard again back then
for $750 and stuck in. It lasted for about a year and when that head gasket
went I called it quits and traded it. That was back in 1988. Drove it all
the way to Washington DC without a thermostat just to get it up there to
trade in on my new Beretta. 300 miles and used just over a 1/4 tank of fuel.
Now if I only new then what I know now I would have kept it. The body was
solid.

Ummm, make that 52 hp. Only low 60's on the TD, 48hp on the 1.5

They usually throw a rod or develop a good knock. I've only seen one but
does seem it was #3. Still intact, just a bad rod journal. I would
normally
attribute it to an oiling problem. Couple that with the one, full groove
main
on #4 main, (as an "improvement" on the bearings) and it looks even more
like an oiling issue.
