We just took a trip to Prescott and back to Flagstaff in my 1.6TD Vanagon.
218 miles round trip. I averaged 27 MPG. That was significantly less than
ideal driving conditions. 30 MPH crosswinds each direction. 1030°F was
the
hottest the EGT's ever ran, due to a long steep run at 65 mph. On the
steepest
extended hill between Ash Fork and Williams the EGT's were about 800 due to
not
being able to maintain 5th gear and dropping into 4th to go 50 with pedal
left
over. Didn't want to go faster due to rpms. Coolant temp gauge stayed
typically right in the middle of the led. On the longest run it ran
slightly above
th LED. Oil pressure at cruising speeds was typically 37 psi or so. It
would
drop on very extended hill climbs, but certainly always above 33 at
cruising
rpms. I'm okay with that, personally. The jetta oil pressure warning
circuit
buzzes at 20 psi above 2,000 rpms. My oil pressure hits 20 at about 1,200
rpms. Overall, very pleased with performance and fuel economy. Only
irritation
on the trip was the wind.

----Alka Seltzer can sort your wind problem.
And I see what your van is missing is an ammeter to measure current
loading :o)
