Wow Fergie~ Sure glad she was able to walk away! Sorry about the car
but grateful your spouse wasn't a total loss also!

Subject: [Vwdiesel] Injection pump timing

Ok Hagar old buddy, your passion for the technique is pretty obvious,
and
much appreciated. You deserve a ton of credit for you input to this
forum. You
enrich our list immeasurably. I wish I had the time to contribute more
to it.
I have paid very close attention to your posts and have learned a great
deal
from you. It's just that when it comes to this, you leave me wanting
for lack
of nuts and bolts details. You can't assume everyone will have the
innate
talents necessary for tuning by ear, and that is the bottom line. If
you were
able to give actual timing specs, and the sorts of sounds and specifics
you have
experienced, it might be somewhat instructive. It's just darned near
impossible to instruct that using a keyboard. I'd hate to see someone
who really
shouldn't be altering their pump timing doing so. As an aside, I think
it's it's
brilliant that you are using the 1.5 nozzles, set to a slightly higher
breaking pressure to increase efficiency and boost your smileage. I
strongly suspect
that those are the main reason for your success. Timing? of course it
can be
a substantial factor, but honestly, I would be very curious to know
where
your "actual" pump timing is set to? Do you have the timing tool? Can
you get
hold of one and get a reading? Do you know the breaking pressures you
have
your injectors set for?? If you could provide some actual, specific
data, then I
would feel like we have something more concrete to work with. Sorry,
Doug

PS Speaking of concrete, I am very sad. Yesterday my spouse wrecked
(and
fully totaled out) the fully loaded mint 85 TD Jetta I had provided for
her.
She ran off the road and into a concrete abutment at a rather high rate
of
speed. It looks just like she got into a head-on with a semi-truck. I'm
impressed
with the car's ability to protect the passenger compartment. Thanks to
those
"crumple zones" and her dedication to wearing the belt, she walked
away.
Whew!>
