[Vwdiesel] T3 turbo rebuild

I have my Garrett T3 apart as far I can go now. I have the shaft and
exhaust impeller still in the bearing housing. I removed the outer circlip on
the intake side of the bearing housing, and got the bearing on that side out.
It doesn't look that bad actually. But I can't tell what is holding the shaft in
place. The next circlip is 3/4" embedded in the housing and I can't reach it
with my circlip pliers. I'm not sure what to try next. I've studied this
diagram:

but I can't see what is holding that shaft in. Could it be just the piston ring?

Also, I noted that my turbo does not have the carbon seal (#6 in the
diagram), but instead has a 'piston ring' type seal, similar to the piston ring
shown as #3 on the turbine end. This is where my oil leak appears to be -
the rubber seals are intact. I'm worried that this tiny piston ring (about 1/4")
may have worn the aluminum 'bore' so that even a new ring will still leak.
