  My first thought is that it has to do with completeness of combustion and 
ash content.  Could be why even though "everybody" recommends using 
ATF in your diesel, "everybody" says DON'T DO IT!  ;-)  The biggest 
concern I've heard of with waste oil is the metalic and silica particles in 
the oil.  Of course carbon would be an issue with used diesel oil.  Probably 
safest to use it for heat.  I tested an old furnace burner with used motor 
oil, in the shop's wood stove.  Build a small fire, get it going and turn on 
the burner.  Worked great!  Just didn't ever make it permanent and I think 
they tossed my burner too.  :-(
