[Vwdiesel] Timing Belt Change: I know I goofed--how much?

Silly me, I took the old belt off before lining up
TDC, etc. Then I go to look at the procedure in
Bentley, and see that things would have been much
easier if I had done that before taking the belt off.
So, how do I avoid installing the belt with the pump
and crankshaft 180 off of the camshaft?
I guess I can pull #1 injector and see that the piston
is up when the pointer is on the mark on the flywheel.
How about the pump? There are two holes for the pin,
so which one do I want to use to verify that it is
firing for #1?
Finally, what can I reference to see how old my pump
is when I go to time it?
Feeling silly,
David
