[Vwdiesel] Timing Belt Change: I know I goofed--how much?

Okay, so I figured out that since there were the
prechambers, I probably wouldn't be able to see what
the engine was doing if I took the injector out, so I
didn't.

I did loosen the cam shaft so none of the valves were
open, and removed the glow plugs to let the
compression out so I could turn over the crankshaft.

But, I'm still not sure how to tell which part of the
stroke is happening when the pointer is at TDC.

But, as I'm typing this, I could be having a
revelation... Does it matter? Won't it actually work
if I just make sure the pointer is at TDC, then set up
the camshaft so that the valves were closed?

Still, any way to know what the pump is doing, if it
is 180 out other than trying to start it later?

Thanks,

David
