I made these suggestions in order to generate responses such as the last one which seems to make sense to me. That is the beauty of a site such as VW Fans. You can throw out an idea & see how practical it is. The answer to the question as to why would someone do this would probably be as varied as the contributors to this site. Some people transplant Chevy V-8s & automatic transmissions into old cars so they can have the convenience of a modern car like air conditioning, power disk brakes, etc along with the style of an old car. With this site or network or what ever you call it I have noted we have several overseas contributors. The thought strikes me that with these international connections that a 3 cylinder VW Polo turbo diesel might make an interesting engine swap if one could find a reliable foreign source for these engines. I have no idea how easy or practical it would be to put a Polo diesel in a type one Karmann Ghia. For those of you who live outside of the USA & Canada, we are not able to import cars that fail to meet USA safety & smog standards unless the car is at least 25 years old for the USA & I have heard, 15 years old for Canada (Canadians, please correct me if I am wrong). However, we are still free to import parts so, if you are going to engineer an engine swap, it might be more sensible to install a more modern fuel efficient engine than a 25 year old VW diesel. Note I said "might". Its also possible that the older VW diesel makes more sense.
