  I was wondering about that as well.  I remember reading years ago about 
how the newer cars actually released less polutants into the air per quantity 

of fuel burned than a power plant used to recharge the batteries, to go the 
same distance in an electric car.  Final decision was that electric cars 
were worse for the environment than petrol given the measured 
polutants, gasses, etc.
  Of course here in the PNW where hydro power is the norm it's a l
ittle different.   Then again the government doesn't consider hydro 
power as a renuable resource!
