The savings would come from recharging at night when public utilities have excess electricity. For my type of driving diesels would make more sence but for someone living in LA a Prius would make more sence. Also, I am looking at things from a pocket book situation & the likelyhood we will be seeing $5 a gallon gas, not from the most efficient use of energy. I underswtand a substantial portion of LA's energy comes from Boulder (aka Hoover) Dam which is hydro electric. One way to get "free" energy would be to install solar panels & have the electric meters spin backwards during the day when electric rates are higher & draw from your public utility as a "battery" at night when the rates are lower.
