85 was just way to retarted and I couldnt seem to get enough advance at any
setting.
Well, that may be because it IS too retarded. My 5k book lists .85mm as
the NA setting and .93mm for the TD. Of course if you have the 5k/Volvo style,
coolant heated, timing advance dingy then you have to be sure and release it
before setting the timing.
If your cam was timed wrong to get the pump right then timing it wrong is
not the best solution. If you can't get enough rotation out of the pump then
jump a tooth or loosen the rear cam bolt and slip that gear a bit to get the
timing range you need. Neither cam gear is keyed. SET YOUR CAM TIMING WHERE IT
BELONGS! Or you run a good risk of nicking a valve with a piston, especially
at higher rpm.
It's not wise to assume the pump's not working correctly when you've not
set everything to spec yet. ;-) Just because the GTD injectors are capable of
higher fuel flows doesn't necessarily mean they do it all the time.
Backing the fuel screw out cuts the fuel. If you weren't seeing any
results from moving it then you either have the wrong screw or else the smoke is
from incorrect timing/s not overfueling. Remember, stepping down less on the
throttle does the same thing as backing out that screw so it's only full throttle
type situations where it affects it. Of course with a TD once the enrichment
kicks in it could smoke a bit but backing off the throttle will still stop
the smoke or else you'll still be accelerating.
