This comment hits the nail on the head. We have an administration of big oil & beholden to big oil. They own producing oil wells that made a healthy income when oil was selling at $2.50 a barrel but greed knows no limits. To spill blood for oil is OK for them as long as it spells profit for the favored few. The DOT & EPA are being used to protect profits for the fat cats. GM was able to give diesel a bad name in the early '80s so the myth that diesels are bad is being perpetuated for the benefit of big oil so more money can be transferred from the poor & middle class to the very rich. European safety & pollution regulations come close & sometimes exceed our regulations. Here in Calif. we can buy big diesel trucks such as the Ford F-250 & Dodge with a Cummings diesel but you can't buy VW TDIs. Which diesel pollutes more, an F-250 or TDI? Isn't it interesting you can buy a Smart diesel in Canada but not our so called "free country" where you "have the best government money can buy". This whole thing is political. Its because half of our citizens are too lazy to vote & much of the other half won't study the issues & are more influenced by 30 second TV commercials in between their sitcom programs & sporting events. I suspect this description is NOT descriptive of most of the people reading & submitting comments here. This situation frustrates me greatly & is one of the reasons I am active in my local political party, in part to try & offset the efforts of the environmental extremists who are anti diesel & want everyone to drive an electric car regardless of how practical it is. But until people wake up I don't think we will be able to buy any 50 MPG vehicles other than a Toyota Prius, Honda Civic & Insight hybrids.
To our Canadian posters. Besides the Smart diesel, how many other cars are sold in Canada that we can't buy in the USA? Is the Lada still sold?
