I made some different changes to my diesel exhaust, based on the same
premise. And maybe I can add to Loren's 'etc' post.
On my 1.6 TD (Jetta, 1985) I run a straight pipe all the way back from the
flange/downpipe.
Removed muffler three years ago.
Diameter of the straight pipe is stock, but taking out the muffler was a
significant move in reducing back pressure, imo.
The sound is a little loud under hard acceleration as I wind up through the
gears, but it is reasonable at legal highway speed, and if I don't want the
noise I can keep my foot out of the throttle.
Certainly doing the same thing with a larger diameter pipe would be a
reasonable thing to try. I'd be interested in how a larger pipe would
affect the noise level in a no-muffler system. It might be noisier, because
it is closer to no pipe at all.
You were talking about a naturally aspirated engine, so I'd expect the
result to be much louder than with the TD. The turbo quiets the exhaust
considerably. Maybe a n.a. couldn't tolerate a straight pipe.
You might try loosening/removing the entire system of pipes and muffler,
and see how it runs that way, and then base your mods on what you see in
the test runs. Perhaps the tests could take place away from closely
monitored and inhabited communities.
