Your failure sounds very similar to Bjorn's (on the TDI-Conversion list). In his 
case, a chunk of epoxy used to make up a custom intake came loose and 
took out one or more vanes. At the speed they are moving, I imagine it 
doesn't take much to crack one of those fragile vanes, so you may never 
find what did it, although it should be trapped in the i/c somewhere...
