I once owned a Argosy (made by Airstream) 26 foot motor home with a transplant Isuzu 6 cylinder industrial turbocharged diesel engine. It got up to 17 MPG & 12 to 13 MPG towing a car trailer with a car on it. I wished I hadn't traded it in on my 30 foot Rockwood diesel pusher that only gets 10 MPG. The Isuzu just had a streight pipe on it, no muffler. I was told the turbo quieted it enough to be legal, but it was still noisey. Don't know what a streight pipe would do for a VW diesel but maybe some of you do.
