When we were fighting the air leaks on Dad's Passat, after putting in
a new fuel filter, we had to replace that whole contraption. I think we
tried an o-ring or at least pushing it down. It helped but replacing it
took care of most of the problem. The other part was the filter end of
the hose-to-clear crimp where it's crimped around the black hose.
On the return end the boot over the return line, in the tank, had slipped
so if the tank was under almost full, air could back into the return line
from
the fuel tank.
