I had something vaguely similar happen on my '85 TD. I'd be buzzing
down the road and it'd cut out on me. I'd dump the clutch a few times
and it'd take off. I replaced/rebuilt everything in the fuel system.
Turned out to be a spotty connection at the fuel stop selenoid. When
I'd dump the clutch at speed, the engine would shift and the wire would
come back into contact. With mine, however, it'd comepletely die. I'm
not sure what system failure could cause an engine to drop to idle.
