Nothing at all.
For sure not veg oil as I'm sure you have that one figured out. ;-)
Clean, dry and spotless is the preferred state.
Presence of any stuff catches brush dust, road grime, and builds up,
very much like yours did. If you figure they are still "sticky", or the
springs aren't good any more, then they should either be cleaned better
with carb cleaner or contact cleaner so they can slide freely, or grab
some brushes and replace just the brushes. That's a very easy procedure
if you can solder. Heat the back of the brush holder where the blob of
solder is, the spring should pop the old one out. Insert the wire of
the new brush/spring through the small hole, solder the back of it.
Don't use too much solder or heat for too long- it will wick up the wire
and make it stiff so it cannot flex, and limit the brush travel. Trick
is to have a very hot iron, and heat the brush holder side first so
solder isn't creeping along the wire while the holder heats up.
