A trick when soldering brushes, is to use a clip on heatsink,
to soak away the heat in the brush wire, so that the solder won't flow.
My favorite tool for soldering starter brushes is a Linde 1 tip (000 or 0000
for other systems) with oxy acetylene. Heats fast, and is hot enough
to use "hard" silver solder (not the plumbers solder!).
