Somewhat predictably, I use the cheapest GEs that I can find, which is 
normally 2/$10.88 at WalMart.  

I'm very interested in HIDs for both my 91 NA Jetta (9004) and my
03 TDI Jetta (9007).  The problem that I haven't seen a good solution for
is high beam settings.

The way I understand it, HIDs are normally (Europe?) a single emitter
bulb, with an articulating reflector.  High beams change the articulation
on the reflector, and there is a height adjustment for low beam.

As far as I have found, the current HID offerings for 9004 and 9007 
are low beam replacement, and don't have a mechanism for high beam.
