[Vwdiesel] Help with ID of an engine

Hi Erik;
VW Foxes were never diesel in this country at least. The engines are
longitudinal like the Audi and Dasher. My wife commutes in an 87 Fox 2 door
wagon in which I plan to put a 1.6 diesel and 5 speed transmission. I bought
the Fox almost 2 years ago but the 1.8 gas in it refuses to die and I can't
see any possible reason to take a perfectly good working gas engine out just
to get a few more mpg. I have the diesel engine and 5 speed tranny in a
Dasher that got wrecked. It is ready to pop in when and if the gas engine
dies. A Quantum Syncro would be a great car for winter travel to Idaho but
Quantum Syncros are all 5 cyl gas engined not that that is a bad thing. I
have a 1988 Audi 5000 CS Quattro 5 cyl turbo gas and as a road car I don't
think there is anything better especially in the mountains and the snow. My
spring project is to turbo my 1981 Rabbit diesel pickup then I will probably
want to drive it instead of my 1981 Gas rabbit pickup with it's 115 plus
horses. The N/A diesel is just to slow for this old hot rodder.

If I needed the parts then maybe $100-200 if the engine was shot? I could be
way off my rocker. Don't really know.
Yes, the Audi diesels were longitudinal, as well as the VW Quantum and
Dasher. I don't know about the Fox - never seen one of them in person close
up to where I could check it out. From the look of it I would guess it was
transverse - the hood looks a little shorter like a Jetta or Rabbit to me.
I almost bought a worn out gas Quantum just because it was 4x4. Still kinda
like the idea of having a little 4 wheel drive diesel station wagon to head
up to the mountain or to visit the in-laws in Idaho.
