[Vwdiesel] dim lights, thick smoke (and loud loud music)

Well, actually the smoke isn't too bad, and the stereo is kinda of an old
POS, so not too loud, but the lights are dim.

I finally got around to replacing the ground straps on the '80 Audi, as well
as a new battery, after the old one seemed to be crapping out.  I used 4 ga.
wire on the battery ground as well as the strap to the block.  I was hoping
that this would solve two problems I've been noticing.  Unfortunately it
didn't.  The car will crank for a good bit before starting except when
warmed up, unless i run the glow cycle twice before starting.  I do notice
that except for the first start in the morning the glow plug light comes on
very briefly or not at all.  This summer i replaced the relay with a fast
glow, as well as all 5 plugs.
The other problem is that the head lights are quite dim, they work all right
on a dark street, but in twilight, or in the city you can hardly tell they
are on.
What else should I look at for these troubles?
