Check the solenoid 12 volt control winding terminal on the starter motor.
It is a push on spade connector on my `91 Jetta and it needs to be wiggled
whenever this happens once in a while on my car. I haven`t serviced this
problem yet. You may find taking a piece of wire, lamp cord will do with
the ends bared and providing momentary contact between the battery positive
and this terminal on the starter will get it to crank over. Before doing
this have the park brake on and transmission in neutral, key on as normal
start, initiating glow plug sequence, then quickly hop out and make the
starter connection by hand.
