  I've never heard of the VW pistons being "oval"  (hyperutectic?)  I do 
know that most pistons are supposed to be measured about the middle 
of the skirt, perpendicular to the wrist pin.  MOST pistons are larger that 
direction than in line with the wrist pin but I know I've measures SOME 
piston that was nearly round.  Almost seemed like it was a VW diesel.  
I have a few new ones sitting around.  I'll see if I can get a mic on one 
tomorrow.
