[Vwdiesel] head gasket?

Driveability affected leaking between cylinders, no not really in the early
stages, but it would get worse quickly, and you would definitely hear a beat
at startup at some point that would flag it for you.
My Dad had an Suzuki Samurai that had a bad head gasket leak between
cylinders 2 & 3 an you would not know it. When the head came off, it was
baaaad.

The exhaust into the coolant head gasket leak is coming from the source...
the combustion chamber, not many other places for it to leak unless you have
a head crack on an exhaust valve chamber... but then you would usually see
noticeable coolant losses and white smoke at startup as the coolant gets
burned away that is present in the exhaust manifold. Most exhaust leaks
into coolant are from head gasket failure... and that has to go either
between the head gasket and block, or between the head gasket and head, one
of which is aluminum, and will erode eventually.
With almost everything, cars, bikes vacuum cleaners, if it's broken, it's a
rare circumstance that continuing to use it won't make it worse.

Good point, but that would be a different type of leak
than what he was describing (and what I had), exhaust
into the coolant.

Wouldn't driveability be affected significantly if the
gasses were passing from cylinder to cylinder?
